• Kmetija — the Slovenian word for farm. This is ours.
    Šentanel is a small village in Koroška, a remote corner of Slovenia where the mountains are serious, the woods run deep, and the people are hard working. We sit just outside the village, looking directly at Mount Peca — a presence you feel from the moment you arrive.
    This is a family farm. We work it with care and without shortcuts. The days are long, the seasons are honest, and the animals set the rhythm. We keep dairy goats, a couple of cows, and a flock of laying hens. The goats are the heart of it — their milk is the beginning of everything we make and much of what we serve.
    Our cows are Cika — an autochthonous Slovenian breed, kept largely unchanged for centuries. Roža and Olivija. Our goats are a mix of Saanen and Drežnica, another old Slovenian breed. Forty animals in total, each with a character of their own. Both breeds are wild and sturdy, shaped by the mountains rather than by comfort. Not unlike the people around here.
    The farm has two dogs. Oto is our ambassador — the first to greet you and the last to let you leave. Sancho is a kelpie, a working dog in the truest sense, and he takes that seriously. In autumn we are expecting a third — Boo, short for Bootes, the constellation of the herdsman. A Maremma Abruzzese, he will take his place among the goats and keep them through the night.
    Koroška has its own dialect, its own rhythm, its own words for things. You will find some of them here — in the names of our apartments, in what we call breakfast, in the way we talk about this place. They are not decoration. They are just how things are named where we come from.
